The death of 4-4-2

The end of another World Cup and yet more bitter disappointment for England fans. The country was more hopeful than ever after a near flawle s qualifying Mason Appleton Women Jersey campaign that saw comprehensive 4-1 and 5-1 wins over Euro 2008 spoilers Croatia, which led to increased expectation for the World Cup, with many experts tipping England to reach at least the semi-finals for the first time in 20 years. This expectation turned to hope after two disappointing draws against the USA and Algeria to start the group stages, with a narrow 1-0 win against Slovenia being enough for England to qualify to play their arch rivals Germany in the second round. The Germans had impre sed many in their group games, particularly in their 4-0 demolition of Australia, lead by their new superstar Mesut Ozil. Of course, the game ultimately ended in a comprehensive 4-1 victory for Germany due to their higher energy levels and ability to catch England on the counter attack. But why were England exposed so badly in this game? A lack of pace, particularly in central defence could have been a factor, however, in my opinion, the primary reason for Englands demise was the rigidity of their 4-4-2 formation compared to the flexibility and fluidne s of Germanys 4-2-3-1. Formations similar to Germanys are popular among a number of national and club teams in modern football due to the ability of the 3 attacking midfielders to constantly switch positions, making them difficult to mark effectively. Spain were the most effective exponents of the formation, with Xavi and Iniesta pulling all the strings during their triumph. A key aspect of the formation is the 2 holding midfielders who protect the back four and provide cover when the full backs venture forward. Indeed, it is vital for the full backs to get forward whenever po sible to provide the width to the teams play. A particular advantage of this formation is that all players know their specific role in the team, which is something that is sometimes not true of the 4-4-2. To use England as an example, while Gareth Barry knows that he has to protect his back four, Steven Gerrard is often unsure of whether he should stick to the left hand side or play more centrally to link up with Wayne Rooney, with Frank Lampard sometimes looking uncertain what his name is and consistently being a liability in an England shirt.Furthermore, Ashley Cole and Glen Johnson seem indecisive as to when they should get forward, causing lack of options in the opposition half and normally a poorly played pa s leading to giving the ball away, which England did far too frequently during the World Cup.So, England should adopt the same formation as Germany then? In a word, yes. You need only look at the effect that Joe Cole had on the Japan friendly when he played just behind Wayne Rooney, with Gerrard playing in a deeper role Riley Sheahan Women Jersey , where he can have more of an effect on the game. The choice of the striker is the most important choice when selecting a team in the 4-2-3-1 formation, as he needs to be a traditional number 9 who plays right on the shoulder of the last defender and moves the ball on quickly to the more creative players behind him. This would automatically rule out Rooney as the striker as he enjoys playing in a free role, which makes him ideal to play as one of the attacking midfielders.Candidates for the striker role include Darren Bent and Gabriel Agbonlahor, among others, who are both young and experienced Premier League players. Although he has yet to prove himself at International level, Bent has all the attributes required for the role. He has pace in abundance, is more than decent in the air and enjoys playing on the shoulder of the last defender. He also has a great goal scoring record in the Premier League, proving he can cut it at the highest level. Due to the amount of goals he has scored, I would prefer Bent to be the lead man in this formation. The three attacking midfielders need to have good creative ability and movement to interchange their positions throughout the match. Wayne Rooney would take up one position, alongside James Milner and either Joe Cole or Ashley Young. The holding midfield positions would be occupied by Steven Gerrard (yes, this is his best position) and Scott Parker, due to his tackling ability and never-say-die attitude. The back four would include the same full-backs from the World Cup in Johnson and Cole, as they were 2 of Englands better performers during the tournament. The centre backs would be Michael Dawson and Ledley King (if fit) as they are both exceptional positionally and they play alongside each other at club level. The final piece of the jigsaw would be filled by Joe Hart, who is no doubt the future England number one for years to come. He is a great presence behind the back four and also a safe pair of hands. These drastic changes are nece sary to transform England into an international force that can compete with the likes of Spain and Brazil. One thing that everyone in England needs to bear in mind though, is that we are simply not on the same planet as the current Spain team. However, with hard work, a different approach and typical English spirit, it is po sible for future England teams to consistently reach the latter stages of tournaments. Providing we dont have to take penalties of course.
